Model Škoda Octavia - one of the most recognizable and successful in the history of the Czech automobile industry. Over more than six decades, this car has evolved from a modest rear-wheel drive sedan to a high-tech liftback with hybrid engines and driver assistance systems. But how first generation 1959 related to modern versions? And why exactly Octavia became the flagship of the brand, surpassing even Superb?

In this article we will analyze each generation in detail, find out which engineering solutions made the model a cult, and we will reveal little-known facts - for example, why the second generation was almost not sold in Europe or how Octavia RS became the first “hot hatchback” from Škoda. And you will also find out what technical know-how of the 1990s are still used in modern versions.

1959–1971: First generation - the birth of a legend

Debut Škoda Octavia took place in 1959 at the Brno Motor Show. The model became the successor Škoda 440/445 Spartak, but received a fundamentally new platform with monocoque body - a revolutionary solution for that time. The name "Octavia" (from the Latin "eighth") symbolized the eighth model of the brand after the war.

The car was equipped with a 1.1-liter engine producing 40 hp, which accelerated the car to 110 km/h. For comparison: the Soviet Moskvich-407 of the same era reached a maximum of 105 km/h. But the main feature was independent suspension of all wheels - a rarity for budget sedans of the 1960s. In 1964, a modification appeared Octavia TS with a 1.2-liter engine (45 hp), and later - a station wagon Octavia Combi.

  • 🔧 Technical Feature: the first Czech car with a synchronized gearbox at all speeds.
  • 🌍 Export: sold to 70 countries, including the USSR (under the name "Octavia").
  • 🏆 Achievement: in 1961 he set 18 world records on the Monza circuit (for example, 100,000 km with an average speed of 110 km/h).
⚠️ Attention: First Octavia had a weak point - corrosion of the thresholds. Today, original examples in good condition are rare and are worth as much as collector cars.

1996–2004: Second generation - revival after a 25-year hiatus

After the fall of the Iron Curtain Škoda became part of the concern Volkswagen Group, and in 1996 the world saw second generation Octavia - already like a liftback on the platform VW Golf IV. It was a fundamentally new car: front-wheel drive, transverse engine, modern security systems.

The base engine is 1.6-liter (75 hp), but the version became a real sensation Octavia RS 2000 with a 1.8-liter turbo engine (180 hp), accelerating to 225 km/h! I wonder what first batches of RS were sold only in the Czech Republic and Slovakia - European dealers believed that the demand for the “hot Škoda” would be low. They were wrong: a year later the model was exported all over the world.

Why was the third generation called the “Czech Audi”

Many interior details (steering wheel, dashboard, climate control) were unified with the Audi A3 of that time. Even the sound insulation and plastic quality met the standards of a premium brand.

2013–2020: Fourth generation - sales record and hybrids

The fourth generation, which debuted in 2012, became the best-selling in the history of the model. The car was built on a platform MQB, which made it possible to reduce weight by 102 kg compared to its predecessor. The design has become more angular, and the dimensions have increased: length - 4659 mm (+90 mm), wheelbase - 2686 mm (+108 mm).

Key innovations:

💡

The Octavia RS is the only Škoda model that was officially delivered to Japan. There it was sold as a “European sports car” at a price comparable to the Toyota GT86.

In Russia Škoda Octavia appeared officially in 2004 with the third generation. Versions with engines were especially popular:

  • 🔹 1.6 MPI (102 hp) - the most reliable and unpretentious.
  • 🔹 1.8 TSI (160 hp) - optimal ratio of power and consumption.
  • 🔹 2.0 TDI (140 hp) - the choice of taxi drivers for efficiency.

After 2022, official deliveries stopped, but the model remains in demand on the secondary market. For example, Octavia A7 (4th generation) with a mileage of 50–80 thousand km in good configuration costs 1.8–2.5 million rubles - cheaper than similar ones VW Golf or Audi A3.

⚠️ Attention: When buying used Octavia with a 1.4 TSI engine (140 hp), check the timing chain - its service life is 120–150 thousand km, and replacement costs 50–70 thousand rubles.
