Czech sedan Škoda Octavia has long been the standard of practicality in the classroom C-segment. The fourth generation, which debuted in 2020, retained the brand’s signature features - a spacious interior, a huge trunk and thoughtful ergonomics - but at the same time received a modern platform MQB Evo, hybrid engines and digital instrument panel. We conducted a week-long test drive Octavia 1.5 TSI (150 hp) in top configuration Style with DSG-7to answer the main questions: does the model live up to its reputation as a “workhorse”, how comfortable is it in the city and is it worth paying extra for a hybrid?
This review is without embellishment: let’s look at it real fuel consumption (spoiler: it is higher than stated), we test it adaptive cruise control on the highway, we check noise insulation at a speed of 140 km/h and compare with key competitors - Volkswagen Golf, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. And also - unique data on the reliability of the 1.5 TSI engine after 100,000 km, which the manufacturer prefers not to advertise.
1. Design: evolution or revolution?
Appearance Octavia 2026 is a classic example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The Czechs have retained their signature features: strict body lines, narrow headlights with LED optics and a massive radiator grille, but added modern accents. Included Style The car has 18-inch alloy wheels Tartarus, chrome inserts on the bumpers and two-tone paint (on our test unit - Energy Blue with black roof).
Side Octavia looks solid, but a little conservative. Taillights with a 3D effect and stamping on the trunk lid add dynamics, but overall the design is more universalthan memorable. For comparison: Toyota Corolla with its aggressive body kits or Hyundai Elantra with futuristic lines they look brighter. But Škoda will not become obsolete in 3 years - this is a plus for those who plan to own it for a long time.
- ✅ Design advantages: discreet elegance, high-quality body materials, good aerodynamics (
Cx=0.24). - ❌ Cons: lack of “wow” effect, rear bumper is too simple for the top version.
- 🔍 Detail: in version
RSsports bumpers, black optics and an exhaust system with two pipes appear.
- Classic (as in review)
- Sports (RS version)
- Hybrid (with blue accents)
- I don't like it
2. Interior: ergonomics are excellent, but there are some nuances
Salon Octavia is a triumph of practicality. The front panel with a minimalistic design and soft-touch plastics (even in the basic configuration) is pleasing to the eye. Central screen 10.25" with support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto responds to touches without delay, and the physical climate control buttons are big plus for those who do not like to be distracted by touch panels.
However, there is also controversial issues:
- The armrest is too narrow - the driver's elbow hangs down.
- The upper part of the dashboard is reflected in the windshield in the bright sun.
- Steering wheel buttons (
MFB) are too small for winter gloves.
Rear passengers receive a record for the class 915 mm legroom (more than Audi A4!) and three full headrests. Trunk volume 600 l (or 1,555 l with folded seats) easily accommodates a stroller, two large suitcases and a bag of groceries - tested in practice.
How to fold the rear seats?
To fold the rear row, pull the levers on the seatbacks (located near the trunk). The seats fold in a 60:40 split. Please note: in hybrid version iV The trunk floor is higher due to the battery.
| Parameter | Škoda Octavia | Volkswagen Golf | Toyota Corolla |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trunk volume (l) | 600 | 380 | 361 |
| Rear legroom (mm) | 915 | 885 | 860 |
| Rear ceiling height (mm) | 980 | 960 | 950 |
| Cabin width (mm) | 1 460 | 1 420 | 1 435 |
3. 1.5 TSI engine: dynamics vs. reliability
Our test Octavia equipped with turbocharged 1.5 TSI power 150 hp and torque 250 Nm. This motor is familiar from Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3, and it has two key features:
- Cylinder deactivation system
ACT(works at low loads). - Variable geometry turbine, which reduces “turbo lag”.
In the city the engine behaves predictably: acceleration to 100 km/h takes 8.2 sec (according to our measurements - 8.5 sec taking into account slippage at the start). On the track Octavia holds confidently 160–180 km/h, but when overtaking you have to “turn” the engine to 5,000 rpm - only then does the promised dynamics appear. DSG-7 It switches smoothly, but sometimes hesitates when releasing the gas suddenly.
⚠️ Attention: Owners 1.5 TSI after80,000–100,000 kmoften encounter contamination of the system valveEGRand turbine leak. Regularly (every15,000 km) check the oil level - its consumption is up to500 mlper thousand is considered the norm for this engine!
The actual fuel consumption in the combined cycle was 7.8 l/100 km (against stated 5.8 l). In traffic jams the figure rises to 10.5 l, and on the highway at 110 km/h - falls to 5.3 l. For comparison: Toyota Corolla 1.8 Hybrid under the same conditions shows 4.7 l/100 km.
☑️ What to check when buying an Octavia with 1.5 TSI
4. Handling: comfort or sport?
Octavia built on a platform MQB Evo, which underlies Golf MK8 and Audi A3. This means:
- ✅ Precision variable power steering.
- ✅ Good directional stability at high speeds.
- ❌ Excessive “softness” of the suspension in basic versions.
In everyday driving, the car behaves predictably: the steering wheel is informative, but not heavy, and the suspension perfectly smooths out bumps. However, on sharp turns, body roll is noticeable - this is not BMW 3 Series. Version RS with adaptive shock absorbers DCC corrects the situation, but stands still 200 000–300 000 ₽ more expensive.
Test for “rearrangement” (sharp change in trajectory at speed 80 km/h) showed that Octavia prone to little under-rotation. ESP operates softly, does not “strangle” the engine, but also does not allow it to go beyond safety limits. For most drivers this is enough, but for those who like to drive it is better to take a closer look at Mazda 3 or Honda Civic.
If you want to improve handling, install tires with a stiffer sidewall (for example, Michelin Pilot Sport 4) and check the pressure - in Octavia optimal values: 2.3 bar front and 2.1 bar behind.
5. Technology: what is really useful?
Škoda does not skimp on “chips”. In the top configuration Style you get:
- 🎯 Adaptive cruise control
ACCwith functionStop&Go(works until0 km/h). - 🚦 Traffic sign recognition (including time restrictions).
- 🅿️ Car valet (parallel and perpendicular).
- 🔦 Matrix LED headlights with automatic light control.
The system turned out to be most useful Travel Assist - she combines ACC and lane keeping, actually providing autopilot level 2. On the highway the system copes well, but in the city it sometimes confuses the markings after road repairs. Surround radar (360°) is useful when parking, but its cameras quickly get dirty in the rain.
⚠️ Attention: FunctionEmergency Assist(automatic stop if the driver loses consciousness) works only if the hands do not touch the steering wheel for more than15 seconds. Don't rely on it as a substitute for vigilance!
Audio system Canton (option for 50 000 ₽) sounds balanced, but lacks “bass” - the bass is inferior even to the standard system JBL in Hyundai Elantra.
6. Hybrid version of iV: is it worth paying extra?
Hybrid Octavia iV combines 1.4 TSI (150 hp) with electric motor (115 hp) and a lithium-ion battery with a capacity 13 kWh. Declared consumption - 1.5 l/100 km, but in reality it is closer to 5.2 l (with charged battery). Without recharging, the hybrid turns into a regular gasoline car with fuel consumption 7.0–7.5 l.
Pros of the version iV:
- 🔋 Possibility to drive to
50 kmon electric power (around the city). - 💰 Benefits upon registration (in some regions of the Russian Federation).
- 🌿 Environmental friendliness (emissions
CO₂—32 g/km).
Cons:
- ⚡ The battery "eats"
100 ltrunk volume. - ⏳ Charging from a household outlet takes
6 hours. - 💸 Price for
500 000–600 000 ₽higher than the petrol version.
Conclusion: Octavia iV justified if you drive around the city every day for a distance of up to 40 km and you can charge your car at home. For long trips, the hybrid does not provide significant advantages.
The hybrid Octavia iV only pays for itself when driven more than 30,000 km per year and regularly charged. In other cases, the gasoline version is more profitable.
7. Reliability and cost of ownership
According to ADAC (German auto club), Octavia 4th generation shows average reliability for the class. Most often they break:
- 🔧 Electronics (parking sensors, cameras).
- 🛢️ Fuel system (injectors in
1.5 TSI). - 🔋 Battery (in hybrid version via
3–4 years).
Maintenance cost at an official dealer:
15,000 km(oil change + filters) —12 000 ₽.60,000 km(replacement of brake fluid + spark plugs) —25 000 ₽.90,000 km(replacement of timing belt + rollers) —40 000 ₽.
Warranty for Octavia — 3 years or 100,000 km. For the hybrid version, the battery is guaranteed for 8 years or 160,000 km. On the secondary market prices for Octavia 2020–2022 starts from 1.8 million rubles (included Active).
8. Competitors: who to choose instead of Octavia?
If Škoda Octavia not convinced, consider alternatives:
| Model | Pros | Cons | Price (from) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Golf | More dynamic, premium interior | Cramped interior, more expensive to maintain | 2.1 million rubles |
| Toyota Corolla Hybrid | Reliability, low consumption | Boring design, weak dynamics | 1.9 million rubles |
| Hyundai Elantra | Stylish design, rich equipment | Less space, worse sound insulation | 1.7 million rubles |
| Mazda 3 | Better handling, premium materials | Small trunk, expensive repairs | 2.0 million rubles |
Octavia outperforms competitors in practicality and price/quality ratio, but loses in dynamics and emotionality. If you need a reliable family car with a large boot, this is the best choice. If you want some drive, look away Mazda 3 or Honda Civic.
