Changing the oil in the ŠKODA Octavia: instructions for engines 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0

⚠️ Attention! On Octavia A7 with engine 1.4 TSI (CZDA) the oil filter is located from above, under a plastic cover. To replace it, you will need to remove the air duct and pipe.

Step-by-step instructions: how to drain old oil

Before draining the oil, warm up the engine to operating temperature (approx. 80–90°C) - this will ensure better drainage of the waste. Next:

1. Turn off the engine and wait 5–10 minutes (the oil will drain into the pan, but will not burn your hands).

2. Raise the car on a lift or drive it into a viewing hole. An alternative is a jack with stops (but this is less safe).

3. Remove the crankcase protection (if equipped) - on Octavia A5 it is secured with 4 bolts, A7 - by 6.

4. Place a container under the drain plug (it is located on the pan, closer to the rear of the engine).

5. Using a 19 mm wrench, unscrew the plug, but not all the way - at the last turn, sharply move your hand away so that the oil does not get on your skin.

It goes to full drain 15–20 minutes. To remove the maximum amount of work, you can:

• 🔄 Rock the car up and down (if on a jack).
• 🔄 Remove the dipstick and blow into the oil filler neck (this will create a vacuum).

Replacing the oil filter: nuances for different engines

The filter changes every time when changing the oil. Its location depends on the engine model:

• 🔧 1.6 MPI (BSE/BSF): filter at the bottom, next to the drain plug. Removable with a 76 mm key.
• 🔧 1.4 TSI (CZDA) and 1.8 TSI: filter on top, under the plastic cover (the air duct must be removed).
• 🔧 2.0 TDI: Filter at the front, next to the alternator (belt may need to be removed).

Replacement algorithm:

1. Before unscrewing the filter, place a rag - ~100 ml of oil will flow out of it.

2. Clean the filter seat from dirt and old gasket.

3. Apply a thin layer of oil to the O-ring of the new filter.

4. Screw the filter in by hand until it stops, then pull it 3/4 turn (do not overtighten!).

⚠️ Attention! On Octavia A7 1.8 TSI When replacing the filter from above, there is a risk of damaging the plastic pipe of the crankcase ventilation system. Work carefully or remove the pipe in advance (fastening with snaps).

Filling with new oil and checking the level

After installing the filter and drain plug (with a new washer!), you can fill in fresh oil. Use a funnel to avoid spills. Algorithm:

1. Add oil in portions 0.5 l, checking the level with a dipstick.

2. After pouring 3.5–4 l (for 1.4 TSI) or 4.5 l (for 1.6 MPI) start the engine at 30 seconds.

3. Stop the engine, wait 2-3 minutes and add oil to the mark "MAX" on the dipstick.

The level is checked at flat surface and cold engine (or 10 minutes after stopping). The optimal level is between the marks "MIN" and "MAX", closer to the top.

After changing the oil, reset the service interval. To do this:

• 🔧 Connect the scanner (VCDS, OBDeleven) and select the block 17 — Instruments.
• 🔧 Go to Adaptation → Channel 02 and set the value 0 (or the required mileage until the next replacement).

Common mistakes when changing oil and how to avoid them

• ❌ Underfilling or overfilling of oil - leads to "oil starvation" or squeezing out oil seals. Always check the level with a dipstick!

• ❌ Tightening the drain plug without a torque wrench - tightening torque 30 Nm, overtightening threatens to break the thread.
